Travel is an important part of life today and travelling during the pandemic has become very complicated. Travelling is normally done for various purposes from leisure to work to studies or research. However, pandemic has limited all of us to essentials travelling and with the opening of sky all the movement that was stalled is happening all over the world. Every individual is taking travel for one purpose or another. Travel during pandemic comes with lot of uncertainties as new rules and dynamic situation with every country makes trips very complicated. It is very difficult to fathom the unforeseen circumstances which wait on travel. Having a good travel insurance policy takes care of many problems and issues arising on travel like loss of passports, loss of documents, loss of belongings, baggage loss, sickness or medical emergencies, trip cancellation or flight delays.

Every policy has its own set of inclusions and exclusions, so it is very important to understand what the things which are excluded are and more importantly the Limitations the policy are part of the Policy.

Coverages with Their Limitations:

1) Accidental Death and Dismemberment: A percentage of the Principal Sum Insured is paid as the Policy Schedule or the Schedule of Benefit if injury occurs under the circumstances described in the Schedule of benefits during an insured journey while this Policy is in effect.

Limitation: If the Insured Person is riding on a motorcycle or any other two wheeled motorized mode of conveyance as driver or as passenger limited amount is payable.

2) Accident & Sickness Medical Expenses: If any Insured person sustain an Injury or Sickness which is not due to Pre-existing Condition and under the circumstances described in the policy wording, will reimburse the Reasonable and Customary Covered Medical Expenses.

Limitations: (a) In no event will benefits continue to be provided by insurance company for any Covered Medical Expenses incurred after the Expiration Date of the policy or insured return to India whichever is earlier. However if, insured person is still confined in a Hospital overseas after the Expiration Date of the Policy, and Emergency Medical Evacuation is not appropriate or recommended by the Assistance Company, and continued treatment overseas as an Inpatient in a Hospital is Medically Necessary, Insurance company will continue to provide the benefits for Covered Medical Expenses incurred to the earlier of your Hospital Discharge or 60 Days after the Expiration Date of the Policy.

(b) If the Insured Person is riding on a motorcycle or any other two wheeled motorized mode of conveyance as driver or as passenger the maximum Principal Sum payable is limited amount.

3)  Baggage Delay: Insurance Company will reimburse you for the expense of necessary personal effects, up to the maximum stated in the policy Schedule or the Schedule of Benefits.

Limitations: If upon investigation it is later determined that insured baggage checked with the Common Carrier has been lost, any amount claimed and paid to you under the Baggage Delay Policy Section will be deducted from any payment due to you under the Common Carrier Baggage Loss or Baggage/ Personal Effects Policy Sections as applicable.

4) Loss of Passport: If insured lose his/her passport and incur necessary and reasonable expenses in connection with obtaining a duplicate or new passport up to the limited stated in the Policy Schedule or the Schedule of Benefits.

Limitations: Company will not be liable under this section for any: a) Theft which is not reported to any appropriate police authority within 24 hours of discovery and an official report obtained.

b) Loss or theft of passport left unattended by insured unless located in a locked hotel room or apartment and an appropriate sized safety deposit box was not available.

5) Flight Delay: Company will reimburse reasonable additional expenses for trip Delay, subject to the limit shown in the Policy Schedule, if insured Trip is delayed for more than 12 hours due to a covered Hazard.

Limitations: a) Delay of a Common Carrier caused by Inclement Weather

b) Delay due to a Strike or other job action by employees of a Common Carrier scheduled to be used by insured during his trip.

c) Delay caused by Equipment Failure of a Common Carrier.

6) Trip Cancellation: Insurance company will pay loss of deposits up to the maximum amount stated in the Policy Schedule, if prior to the Contracted Departure Date insured Trip is canceled and insured is prevented from Taking the trip due to a Sickness, Injury or death to: Insured person; Insured Travelling Companion; Insured Immediate Family Member; or Insured Traveling Companions’ Immediate Family Member under the circumstances described in a Hazard during the course of an Insured Journey.

7) Bounced Booking of Hotel And Airline: To claim this benefit under non-availability of accommodation on account of over booking by the hotels or airlines, the insured should have reconfirmed the booking in advance and should have written proof of the same. Wait listed booking will not be compensated for. For airline overbooking, an option of a free replacement flight within 6 hours from the departure of the original overbooked original flight must not be available to you and you must cancel your originally booked flight and purchase a new flight at the same class of service of no more than 10% greater fares than your original overbooked flight.

However it is important to understand Scenarios such as Curtailment or Cancellation Due to COVID-19

  • Unexpected Lockdown or Curfew : In the present scenario, countries announcing immediate lockdowns and cancellation of flights are becoming common.  Today, it is possible that when you are abroad, the host government may announce an unexpected lockdown or curfew, resulting in the cancellation of your flight. In such a case, you are simply a circumstantial victim and your travel insurance company can help you by covering for your delayed or cancelled flight.

  • If you’re Found COVID Positive : It is possible to be caught by the coronavirus while travelling overseas. In case you are found to be COVID positive, a valid travel insurance cover can help in availing of medical emergency services without worrying about the heavy expenses. All the medical covers you have opted for will prove to be of great help in such a situation.
